Young Deaf Code

Welcome to Deaf Young Code.

We are starting a new project.
The project is about programming and coding.
Digitalisation is our world.
The digital world is becoming more and more important every day.
We want to work with young, Deaf people.

We are 8 organisations from 7 countries.
The countries are:
Austria, Slovakia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Greece and Italy.

We want to provide information about coding and programming in different languages - in easy language and in sign languages.
What is programming and coding?
In short, programming is the writing of software programmes as code that a computer can execute.
Simple coding means writing code and a coder is a person who codes from one language into another.

This project aims to provide young Deaf people with valuable transferable skills, but also coding skills that will make them more attractive to potential employers; they will be more resilient and demonstrate greater self-determination and independence.

We want to develop...

  • A digital map
  • Explanatory videos
  • A blended learning training course

Unemployment among young people (under 25) in the EU remains very high, and it is getting worse when it comes to Deaf young people, for whom the barriers they face to achieving their career goals are much greater. Meanwhile, the need for labour is rapidly shifting and the practical skills required for today's increasingly technical jobs are increasing. Technology is now the backbone of many jobs, and programming languages and coding skills could be the key to success.

To address this fact, the DYC project aims to promote the social and professional inclusion of Deaf youth in 7 countries (IT, AT, SK, SB, RO, HU and GR) and across Europe. The focus is on the development of digital skills in general and on programming, teaching not only the passive use of digital devices, but also the possibility to actively programme and learn to programme.

The project consortium consists of the following organisations:

  • Associazione Ergon a favore dei Sordi (Italy)
  • equalizent Schulungs- und Beratungs Gmbh (Astria)
  • DeafStudio (Slovakia)
  • Skola sa domom za ucenike ostecenog sluha i govora (Serbia)
  • Liceul tehnologic special Vasile Pavelcu (Romania)
  • Signcoders kft (Hungary)
  • Gkintikas bros (Greece)
  • European Network for Digital Learning
  • DLearn (Italy).

During its duration (27 months), the project is expected to lead to the following outcomes:

  1. A clickable digital map of best practices in education, coding services and programming accessible to the deaf.
  2. A blended learning training package with a large number of animated learning videos on programming was developed, tested by young deaf people and made available online in an accessible, multilingual format.

The main target group is young deaf people. By giving them access to coding, we increase their creativity, teach them to collaborate across physical and geographical boundaries and communicate in a universal language. Our second target group is youth workers and trainers.
